Speculate to accumulate

You may or may not be aware that the author of this rather unremarkable blog, has as a hobby, the ambition to become an adequate player on the king of all musical instruments, the trombone. Some progress has been made over the last ten years or so but the sunlit uplands are still some distance ahead. Notwithstanding that fact, the band that I have the rather dubious honor to be the Chairman of [ The F.S.B. Big Band ] are prepared to tolerate my somewhat inexpert efforts in the position of third trombone.

Perhaps I should explain at this point that the band was formed in 1990, at which time I was the double bass player, and was designed to be run by the musicians themselves, and that because I was too slow to decline the position I was somehow elected Chairman, a post that I have attempted to discard at every AGM since but without success.

What does any of this have to do with speculation? Allow me to explain.

Until now the band has always relied on being asked to play concerts or other functions by the people who were organising them, which generally meant that we had no control over the type of music or the amount of time we were obliged to play for. So it was decided that we would put on our own concert over which we would have full control of all aspects. To that end we hired a hall, printed leaflets, advertised and promoted, which all took a considerable sum from the band funds. Well the concert was a success, the band funds were increased by as much as we had speculated, and you can be sure that we will be speculating again before too long.
